Minimum Wage
What is minimum wage? By law, it is the lowest wage that an employer can pay an employee. This is a basic Employment law specific to the province or territory in which your business operates.
Do you have questions about paying your employees? Here’s what employers need to know about minimum employment standards for paying wages.
Alberta’s General Minimum Wage is $15.00 an Hour
As of October 1, 2018, the minimum wage in Alberta is set as follows:
Employee Type | Wage Rate |
General | $15.00 per hour |
Salespersons | $598.00 per week |
Domestic Employees | $2,848.00 per month |
As of June 26, 2019 the minimum wage for students under 18 is $13/hour. This new rate applies for students working 28 hours/week or less during the school terms. Employers must pay students the general minimum wage of $15/hour for time exceeding 28 hours in one week.
Minimum wage is the same for adults, youth, liquor servers, and disabled people. Employers can only reduce an employee’s wages below the minimum wage for meals and lodging (deductions for uniforms are not permitted).
It is important to be aware of the rules around minimum wage as well as any exempt occupations. If you are concerned about paying your employees and managing these changes effectively, ask Employer Line.
What does this mean for employers?
At $15.00 an hour, Alberta has the highest minimum wage in the country. For employers, this means preparing your business by:
- Re-evaluating your organization
- Making the necessary changes to adapt
- Communicating any transition to your staff
There are many employer benefits that have come with Alberta’s minimum wage increase, including the small business tax rate reduction. However, in reality, businesses with smaller profit margins will likely experience the greatest impact.
