Overtime Hours and Overtime Pay

As an employer regulated by Manitoba’s Employment Standards, you must provide overtime pay to employees who work a certain number of hours in a day or week. This includes students, part-time employees, and minimum wage earners.

What are Manitoba’s hours of work rules?

Standard hours of work are usually 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week. Work beyond these hours is considered overtime and must be paid at 1.5 times the employee’s regular rate.

Overtime Pay and Entitlement

Overtime Hours

Overtime is all hours worked over eight (8) hours in a day or 40 hours in a week, whichever is greater.

Employee Entitlement

Overtime pay is at least 1.5 times your employee’s regular wage rate for all overtime hours worked. However, some exceptions exist for certain industries and professions. If you’re unsure about paying your employees or calculating overtime pay, call Employer Line’s experts today.

Banking Overtime Hours

Upon agreement between the employer and employee, instead of overtime pay, employees can bank their overtime as long as the following rules are followed:

  • For every hour of overtime worked, 1.5 hours of time is banked. This is paid at the regular wage rate when the employee takes the time off.
  • Time off must be scheduled during the employee’s regular hours.
  • Employers must provide the time off within three months of it being earned (except in cases where Employment Standards authorize a longer period).
  • If banked time is not taken within three months of being earned, workers are to be paid out all banked hours at their regular wage.
